River Tam ACEO

River Tam ACEO

Written as part of MoJoWriMo, my 50,000 word NaNoWriMo writing spree in 2013

River is a character that is a true Joss Whedon triumph. She has problems, real problems, big problems. She has been broken by the world, in fact for most of the series she is one of the only reasons that we suspect that there is something truly wrong with the Alliance that governs the galaxy. Yet she works her way through these problems with a little help from her friends and becomes a very strong female hero.

All this despite the fact that she did it herself. There were no fairy godmothers, no magic beans and no dashing white knight to come and rescue her. She doesn’t return to the person she was before everything happens to her, she is still not really all there. However she pulls herself up and makes a real difference in the world around her and in the outcome of the story. That is a character that I can respect. A story that I am not afraid will give people the wrong impression about the way things are. That is why I like River Tam and another reason I like the Whedonverse.

Too Much Hair – A Firefly ACEO

Written as part of MoJoWriMo, my 50,000 word NaNoWriMo writing spree in 2013

Like many people, I was not aware of Joss Whedon’s epic space western Firefly while it was airing on television. I don’t know the reason for this. While the show now enjoys a cult following, low ratings and high cost put a swift end to the truly wonderful series of episodes.

Joss Whedon is not a newcomer to television. He made his mark with the comedy / action show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and went on to make more entertaining programming including Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible’s Sing along Blog and most recently Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The last is a show that you should check out if you haven’t already. I lives up to his standards and I hope that it stays on the air for a long time to come.

One of the things that I love about his programming are the humorous situations that he puts his characters into. The unexpected punchline at a tense moment or the humorous yet awkward situation characters find themselves in.

This card captures one such moment from Firefly. The character known as “Book”, a preacher with a mysterious past is a kind yet serious character. Well groomed with his white hair always tied back.

Among others sharing the space aboard the freighter Serenity with him is the only slightly sane genius River who is brilliant yet broken by a government that has tried to harness her talents for their own nefarious purposes. River stumbles upon Book at a moment where he has his hair untied and splayed out around his head. This is traumatic for River who runs, screaming that he has “too much hair”

The moment is, I’m sure worse for my story telling, yet it is one of my favotire moments from Firefly. If you prefer to see the scene as it was meant to be seen check out the video below.

What in the Whedonverse ATC Swap

Last year, I finally took the plunge and hosted my first ATC Swap. I think that finally made up my mind was that I had a theme that I wanted to made and trade for cards in. That theme was the world of Joss Whedon.

I am a fan of pretty much everything that this guy has made. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dr Horrible’s Sing along blog, Dollhouse the lost goes on. For this swap I decided on fan art from anything and everything that the man has created.

One of the best sci-fi shows of all time. It’s premature cancellation is often referred to by it’s fans as a great travesty foisted upon us by the media corporations. Firefly was a well written and executed with Joss’ trademark snappy dialog and an interesting plot line. It’s characters had depth and humor as they traversed the far reaches of space in search of work in this space western.

The pilot of the ship Serenity was Wash whose introduction to the audience involved him playing with toy dinosaurs on the console of the ship which is what is depicted here.

Another great yet cancelled show was Dollhouse. The story of an underground service that provided human dolls, programmed to meet the wishes of it’s rich clientele. What could have been a simple story about a high tech brothel expanded into a world of intrigue and even a post apocalyptic wasteland. Dr Claire Saunders played the doctor for the facility.

If you haven’t discovered the Geek and Sundry channel on You Tube you are missing out. One of the shows on the channel is called Written by a Kid, which is just that. Each week a kid’s story is brought to life by a movie industry professionals. The initial episode was called Scary Smash and featured the acting talents of Joss himself.

Firefly ACEO Series

A few weeks ago, I completed a 3:3 Firefly swap. Well at the same time, I also created six other Firefly themed cards that I put together to make my first Firefly themed ACEO series.

I love the show Firefly and it’s accompanying movie Serenity. Probably not a big surprise since I am a fan of all things Whedon. The dialog is great and the space western feel is perfect with the set of characters that are on the show. There is so much to choose from as subject matter from this show, even though it had such a short run. Eventually I was able to narrow down the card list.

Here is the card list for this ACEO set:

  • Kaylee’s Dress
  • Jayne’s Hat
  • Zoe
  • Too much Hair!
  • River Tam

Kayle’s Dress ACEO

Kaylees Dress ACEO

It sure is shiny!

This is the first card from my first Firefly ACEO Series.

This storyline was so adorable. Kaylee being a tomboy and mechanic feels left out as a female love interest. This interest is especially desired from the ship’s doctor Simon Tam, but is only made worse by Mal’s ham handed attempts to talk Kaylee out of buying a pretty dress on display in town. In the end Kaylee gets the dress.
