What in the Whedonverse ATC Swap

Last year, I finally took the plunge and hosted my first ATC Swap. I think that finally made up my mind was that I had a theme that I wanted to made and trade for cards in. That theme was the world of Joss Whedon.

I am a fan of pretty much everything that this guy has made. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dr Horrible’s Sing along blog, Dollhouse the lost goes on. For this swap I decided on fan art from anything and everything that the man has created.

Firefly – Curse Your Sudden Yet Inevitable Betrayal

Curse Your Sudden Yet Inevitable Betrayal ATC

One of the best sci-fi shows of all time. It’s premature cancellation is often referred to by it’s fans as a great travesty foisted upon us by the media corporations. Firefly was a well written and executed with Joss’ trademark snappy dialog and an interesting plot line. It’s characters had depth and humor as they traversed the far reaches of space in search of work in this space western.

The pilot of the ship Serenity was Wash whose introduction to the audience involved him playing with toy dinosaurs on the console of the ship which is what is depicted here.

Dollhouse – Dr Claire Saunders

Another great yet cancelled show was Dollhouse. The story of an underground service that provided human dolls, programmed to meet the wishes of it’s rich clientele. What could have been a simple story about a high tech brothel expanded into a world of intrigue and even a post apocalyptic wasteland. Dr Claire Saunders played the doctor for the facility.

If you haven’t discovered the Geek and Sundry channel on You Tube you are missing out. One of the shows on the channel is called Written by a Kid, which is just that. Each week a kid’s story is brought to life by a movie industry professionals. The initial episode was called Scary Smash and featured the acting talents of Joss himself.

Jayne’s Hat ACEO

Jayne's Hat

ACEO Number Eleven: Jaynes Hat

From my series of Firefly Cards.

The Hero of Canton himself, the man they call Jayne! Here we see him in his trademark knit hat. Wonderfully portrayed by Adam Baldwin, Jayne is a ruthless, greedy, power hungry, back-stabbing mercenary and we love him for it.

Firefly ACEO Series

A few weeks ago, I completed a 3:3 Firefly swap. Well at the same time, I also created six other Firefly themed cards that I put together to make my first Firefly themed ACEO series.

I love the show Firefly and it’s accompanying movie Serenity. Probably not a big surprise since I am a fan of all things Whedon. The dialog is great and the space western feel is perfect with the set of characters that are on the show. There is so much to choose from as subject matter from this show, even though it had such a short run. Eventually I was able to narrow down the card list.

Here is the card list for this ACEO set:

  • Kaylee’s Dress
  • Jayne’s Hat
  • Zoe
  • Too much Hair!
  • River Tam

Kayle’s Dress ACEO

Kaylees Dress ACEO

It sure is shiny!

This is the first card from my first Firefly ACEO Series.

This storyline was so adorable. Kaylee being a tomboy and mechanic feels left out as a female love interest. This interest is especially desired from the ship’s doctor Simon Tam, but is only made worse by Mal’s ham handed attempts to talk Kaylee out of buying a pretty dress on display in town. In the end Kaylee gets the dress.

Firefly ATC Time: Illustrated ATCs June Match Game

I signed up for the June Match Game over on Illustrated ATCs. The match game is a swap where players are paired up with another player and during the month make one or more cards to swap. Inconceivably, I was paired up with WonderStrange’s AnnD. Being sci-fi fans, we decided to do a 3:3 Firefly themed swap.

Firefly

For those of you that are not aware of the cult sci-fi shoe Firfly and it’s concluding movie Serenity, it is one of the best sci-fi shows that never had a chance to take off. It was cancelled after only a dozen or so episodes and has since gained cult status with fans who enjoy it’s space western style and Whedon-esque dialog.

This is not the first time that I have made Firefly ATCs. Back in 2011, I created a set of 4 ATCs for a Firefly Swap. This time around I made cards for some of the same characters and a new one.

Malcom Reynolds

Captain Malcom Reynolds

Captain Reynolds, or Mal for short, is the browncoat rebel turned smuggler on the outer rim. Being captain of the Serenity firefly class ship means that he is responsible for keeping his ship and it’s crew alive and well. Which when you are in the outer fringe and doing what you can to avoid running into the Alliance is harder than it sounds.

Our Mrs. Reynolds

Saffron is Our Mrs. Reynolds

Saffron is the poor innocent backwoods country girl who is passed off in marriage to the drunkard Mal when her previous caretaker cannot pay his debts. Her poor innocent flower will need protection on the heathen den of iniquity known as Serenity. Will the Shepherd Book be able to spare her indignity. Will Mal come to terms with the fact that he is married? Is Saffron really who she seems?

Inara

Inara

Inara, the companion with the heart of gold. She is beautiful, educated, talented and costs a few months salary a night. Of course she gets to choose her clients.

Firefly Swap

Back in the summer of 2011, I participated in a swap with a theme of Joss Whedon’s cult space western, Firefly. I, like many of it’s other fans, loved this show and am saddened by the fact that there are so many horrible shows on TV, yet this show was cancelled so quickly. Thankfully, Serenity was made to add some sort of conclusion to the series.

Inara

Inara

Inara Serra is a registered companion, or courtesan, who rents a shuttle on Serenity, the ship that the show follows. She adds a level of respectability to the otherwise ragged crew of smugglers, mercenaries and folks running from the law.

Kaylee

Kaylee

Kaylee Frye is the country girl turned ship’s mechanic keeps the firefly class ship up and running. She is a tomboy, but has a soft side as well as we see in the episode with dress and in her continuing failure to catch the eye of the ship’s doctor, Simon.

Mal

Mal

Malcom Reynolds owns and captains the ship Serenity. He is an honest outlaw and likable rebel, cut from a cloth an similar to Star Wars’ Han Solo. He is played by Nathan Fillion, AKA Captain Hammer or perhaps you know him as Rick Castle.

Jayne

Jayne

Jayne Cobb is the no good cutthroat outlaw that you can’t help but like anyway. Played by Adam Baldwin who is another familiar face that you will know if you are a watcher of anything awesome.
