Here are my cards from a swap run by EdensRainbow.
Here’s the description for the swap:
Everyone loves mermaids! Especially their friends. For this swap you must depict a mermaid with at least one other undersea friend. It could be a starfish, crab, shark, eel, seahorse, whale or (my personal favorite) an octopus!
While I don’t have a particular fondness for the fish women called mermaids, I must admit that they make excellent subjects for art and undersea and oceany stuff is lots of fun anyway. Needless to say, I signed up for this 3 (+1) swap and here are my cards:
Brunette and Squid.
The “friend” aspect of the swap was a bit of a stumper for me. I kept thinking of Disney’s little mermaid and that little flounder fish guy. I didn’t want to draw cutesy Disney fish guys with mermaids so I reached for the nearest undersea cool thing that came to mind. Squid! Squids are cool. They have tentacles.
Blonde and Seahorse
One friend down and three to go! I had already used the squid, so I was down one aquatic friend. Still a seahorse is not a cute Disney fish so I went him for this one. I also had fun with the crazy hair on these.
Pink and Pearl
Here is the strategically placed oyster on the mermaid’s tail. Almost presenting it to the viewer, and more than likely about to lure in some unsuspecting sailor.
I went a completely different direction for this one. I used the Starbucks logo for my mermaid, but once again the friend was causing me trouble. Where would I put it? In the coffee cup of course! The best part is that I got to incorporate caffeinated beverages.
